2019 will not only see a new European Parliament and College of Commissioners but a new look European Council, with a new President and the likelihood of a number of new members following national elections. The infographic maps out the dates for those elections up to 2023, with the main focus on the 8 or 9 that will take place before autumn 2019 when the European Council will be taking key decisions on top posts. The political balance in the European Council is already shifting, with the number of Socialist leaders dropping alarmingly. The timeline illustrates that it is the Liberals that have most to fear in the coming elections, with their leaders currently in power (or part of a coalition) in 5 of the next 7 elections. These leaders will of course be selecting their candidates for Commissioner in summer 2019 and the political balance of that body will reflect the outcome of national elections as much as the European ones.
